How to Find a Reputable Content Writer?

When you’re looking to hire a content writer, you’ll quickly realize that there is almost an infinite selection of freelancers to choose from. That’s because anyone can claim to be a content writer if they can type in English. Sadly, many of these so-called “content writers” are just people looking for a quick buck online. Many of them don’t know the ins and outs of SEO, and they won’t go the extra mile to ensure you receive outstanding service. Here are Loco Content‘s tips for separating the frauds from the legitimate writers.

Do They Have Their Own Website?

There’s nothing wrong with being listed on sites like Upwork or Fiverr, but if they have their own website then you know they’re serious about their profession. Setting up your own site takes a lot of unpaid time and investment. So if you see a writer with their own website, which is stacked with information and a portfolio, then you’ll know this is their full-time job.

Do They Have Impressive Experience?

Head over to their site and check out their portfolio. If you want reliable results, then make sure they have a range of experience working for multiple clients. If you see repeated examples of one client that’s also good news, as it means they passed the test for someone else. They should at least have examples of SEO blogs, home pages and landing pages.

Experience is vital for any reputable content writer. It means they’ve learnt the tricks of SEO and voicing. It all shows they’re dependable and have a knowledge of the industry.

Do They Understand Formatting?

Content writing is more than just words. It’s about phrasing, editing and formatting. They need to understand how to use subheadings, paragraphs and capitalizations. If you can’t see evidence of this, then move along. Web Developers, in particular, will save a considerable amount of time by hiring a writer that understands how to use formatting properly.

Pay for Quality

It’s often instinctive to go for the cheapest writer you can find. But as the saying goes, “pay cheap and you’ll pay twice.” Make sure you find a content writer that has respectable rates. If you pay for someone that costs $0.05 per word, their command of the English language will inevitably let you down or they’ll cut corners in areas like research and proofreading. Pay right, and you’ll only pay once.

Ask for Referrals

Consider asking business friends for their content writer suggestions. The best writers are rarely looking for work, as it comes to them instead. The easiest way to find them is to ask around.

What’s Their Turn Around Speed?

The best content writers will strive to satisfy their clients by giving a sensibly quick turn around. That doesn’t mean you should expect work completed within 2 hours, but within 1-2 days for a 500-1,000 word article. If they have a busy schedule, they should be able to give you an approximate date for when they’ll get the job started or finished. If they can’t promise to provide you with updates while working, then be cautious.

Think of Your Audience

There’s no point in hiring a specialist in brain surgery if you’re selling baby clothes. Look for a writer made for your niche or a writer that is versatile enough to tackle your topic with ease.

Alternatively, I also believe that sometimes finding a writer that is new to a complex subject can be beneficial. For example, Loco Content was hired by a law firm to write practice areas pages for the general public. If I was an expert in the law, I might have over complicated the writing. Instead, I was on the same level as the general public and therefore, was keeping it simple to understand.

Can They Research Your Topic?

In my opinion, the very best content writers are those who can research new topics and then confidently write about it. It’s another reason why you should pay more than the low grade too. Ask the writer if they’re comfortable with digging around for information on your subject. If they say “yes, I do this all the time!” then bingo!

Talk to Them

Send them a quick message and suss out how motivated they are to help you. Content writing can be tiring, and so you need a writer that is willing to go that extra step and squeeze out that extra bit of quality. You also need a real professional, someone who is doing this for a living and therefore can’t afford to let standards slip.
